HOW-TO:
Daylighting Installation
  Issue #309 - October 2008
Skylights have long been popular for their ability to provide natural light. But until recently, they were something of a luxury item. A typical skylight installation would run over $1,200, and the installation was complex enough that most DIYers were hesitant to try it.

That all changed in the late ’80s with the advent of the Solatube Daylighting System. Instead of a complicated window-like structure, here was a simple pipe that delivered more light than a much larger skylight.

Because the installation only involves
cutting holes in the ceiling and roof and then fitting pipes together through these holes, the installation is now realistic for even a beginner DIYer. But perhaps the best part is the price: The 10" Solatube 160 DS costs $300, and the larger 14" 290 DS is $400. The result is an economical way to bring natural light into your home.
